In a world where vulnerability and low self-esteem often overshadow the strength within, we find a force that can either empower or dishearten. Witnessing its beauty and its shame, I observe it both in the early morning light and as the day comes to an end. It is a universal desire, a crucial need that, when present in the right measure, propels us to build dreams, chase them, and live for a purpose beyond ourselves.
Yet, when this force is excessive, arrogance and pride take over, and when it is lacking, a sense of inadequacy and damaged self-esteem prevails. It accompanies us from our first breath to our last, serving as either our greatest ally or our harshest critic. This elusive force, sought in places, things, and positions, can also be discovered in the quiet depths of our hearts. It encourages us to embrace life, love deeply, and serve well, affirming our value and worth.
This powerful force goes by the name of Confidence.
I recently stumbled upon an article discussing the truest form of confidence as “having full trust.” Although I can’t recall its source, this description resonated with me. It prompts us to ponder where we place our trust—in ourselves, our partners, or the influencers on social media. Who or what validates us as individuals, and where do we derive our confidence?
Our journey with confidence commences with the loving gaze of our parents at our first breath. This initial bond lays the foundation for building confidence as we learn to trust our parents’ guidance and support. Their belief in our abilities propels us to explore, take risks, and face life’s challenges. Unfortunately, not everyone experiences this in a nurturing environment, as broken homes and broken people abound in our society.
As we grow, input from parents, family, friends, teachers, and even strangers shapes our confidence. In a loving environment, confidence flourishes, fuelled by positive relationships. However, in a broken society, negative influences may dominate, leaving scars on our self esteem. We often value others’ opinions more than our intrinsic worth, allowing external input to guide our confidence.
Imagine the significance of trusting and valuing someone who takes time and effort to create a meaningful gift. Now, consider a loving Father who intricately knitted each person in their mother’s womb over nine months.
During a period of low confidence, I questioned my abilities and self-worth. Despite following prescribed steps and reading confidence-boosting books, I found true freedom only when shifting my focus from self-improvement to a perception of God. By cultivating a deep relationship with a loving Father and His son Jesus Christ, I discovered enduring confidence.
For me, confidence is a relational journey, with the foundation being my connection with my heavenly Father. This relationship empowers me to overcome challenges, grow in abilities, and witness tangible results. I no longer seek confidence in external factors; instead, I find it through Him who loves and believes in me. It’s not an easy journey but a way of living, rooted in a profound internal knowing established through a relationship with Father God.
In the end, confidence is the ability to trust fully. The question remains: In whom or what do you place your trust?
